ReviewsMy wife and I had wanted to visit Key West for more than two decades. We finally saved up enough money to do it. Once we decided to take the trip, we had to figure out where to stay. This wasn’t a nuisance, though. It was actually a lot of fun. Key West isn’t like other tourist areas. There aren’t a lot of big concrete hotels all over the place. Instead, there are smaller places that offer much more personality and comfort. After reviewing at least five or six places, we chose the Conch Republic Cottage Suites. This ended up being an excellent choice, which really helped the quality of our vacation.
I’ll begin with our accommodations. We stayed in Porchside Paradise. This villa can sleep between two and four people, and it’s the biggest one they have. We were only two people, but since it was so affordable, we figured we might as well take the extra space. We had two floors. The downstairs is where we spent most of our time. The full kitchen was nice to have since we love to cook. We always ate at the breakfast bar and then settled down to watch some TV or a movie in the evenings. We also took advantage of our private Jacuzzi. In the mornings, we would make our coffee and sit on the deck, which was incredibly relaxing. In-between all these relaxing activities we were out and about, exploring everything Key West had to offer.
As you might have expected, our first stop was the beach. My wife wanted to tan, but I wanted more action. First I went parasailing, which was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. Immediately after that, I went jet skiing. This wasn’t as exhilarating, but it was still a lot of fun. I introduced the idea of a sunset cruise on a sailboat to my wife, hoping she would say yes. She approved immediately. That cruise was beyond romantic. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to top it when it comes to offering something romantic to my wife. The next day, we went on a glass-bottom-boat tour. Seeing the sea creatures beneath our feet was amazing. A few people on the boat were a little too tipsy, but I guess that comes with the territory.
We saw the Hemingway House and the Key West Lighthouse at the same time since they were right next to each other. We would highly recommend both. The Key West Aquarium was small, but extremely well run. The shark feeding was by far the coolest feature. Also keep in mind that they use this facility to nurse sea creatures back to life, which we found very neat. The only attraction we didn’t care for that much was the Conch Tour Train. Some people might find it fun, but we thought it was corny. In regards to bars, we spent a lot of time at the Green Parrot Bar. We loved the atmosphere, bartenders and music. Our original intention was to check out all the bars, but we enjoyed the Green Parrot Bar so much that we didn’t see any sense in going anywhere else.
If you’re considering a trip to Key West, we highly recommend it. You should also strongly consider staying at the Conch Republic Cottage Suites.
