Beginning just south of Miami, the Florida Keys are made up of nearly 1700 small islands called keys. The keys in Florida are mostly uninhabited tropical islands. The other Florida Keys located on the west coast of Florida like Siesta Key and Long Boat Key have beautiful resorts and hotels. The keys are islands, so they offer miles of beaches. Beach front hotels in the Florida Keys are actually not as prevalent as one might think. There are actually not a lot of hotels on the beach in the Florida Keys, likely because of the maintenance and the demand for boat dockage. The Keys in north west Florida however have incredibly beautiful white sand beaches.

The most popular amenities for the hotels in the keys is a pool. Most folks want a vacation that includes some time in the Florida sun, working on a tan instead of their usual day job. Relaxation and a laid back atmosphere are top priorities for most Florida Keys hotels. If you are looking for the best deals or simply a cheap hotel in the Florida Keys, you'll want to look for the hotels that are more land locked. There are hotels in the keys of Florida that have nice rooms and comfortable accommodations, however they are not right on the water.

The further south you go towards the final southernmost point in the united states located in Key West, the more activities and amenities there are which are not a direct part of your lodging. Scuba diving, fishing, snorkeling, and the usual activates of the Florida Keys are available from Key Largo to Key West. As you go further south however there are more restaurants, bars, shopping, and the other places that can make a vacation more fun and keep the family entertained while you're out fishing.

A common misconception is that hotels are cheaper in the upper Florida Keys compared to Key West. Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Hawks Kay, Duck Key, and Key West are the most popular keys for a vacation. Unfortunately none of them are cheap to visit. Off Season (summer) is the cheapest time to vacation in the Florida Keys by simple demand. In Season (winter) the keys in Florida are really popular and many folks that live up north during the off season, live in the Florida Keys during the season to get away from the cold and snow. So vacationing in the Keys in the off season is much cheaper than it is in season, but the Florida Keys hotels are not know for being the most affordable. With world class fishing and less pressure on the reefs of the upper Keys, hotels and resorts in the upper Keys near Islamorada and Key Largo are no less expensive than the hotels down in Key West.

Vacationers often ask us where the best hotel in the Florida Keys is. We tell them it depends on a lot things mainly outside of the hotel that are influencing your vacation. Are you planning on fishing, or just laying out to catch some sun by the pool? Are full resort amenities important to you? Must you have a nice beach? Before you decide where in the keys of Florida you are going to stay, think about what you'll be doing when you're not at the hotel. If you want the best of everything and the most to do, then the vacation should be taken in Key West. If Scuba diving is the top priority, then you can save some money and see areas of the reef that get much less pressure by visiting areas like; John Pennekamp state park, or Looe Key Reef which is off of Big Pine Key and south near to Cudjoe Key. There are several dive shops but few hotels in the area however, so vacation rental might be a better fit for that type of vacation. If you plan to stay for a longer period of time, vacation rentals can offer a much cheaper vacation for a large group or small. If your vacation is going to longer than a week, you might seriously consider a vacation rental. The savings over eating out at the restaurants can easily make for a much cheaper vacation to the Florida Keys.

If deep sea of flats fishing is your reason for vacationing, then Islamorada is known as the fishing capital of the world. However the reef runs the entire length of the keys and frankly the fishing is outstanding from Key Largo to Key West. The Florida Keys essentially separate the gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic ocean, so there is simply an abundance of types of fishing that you can enjoy on your vacation. Many hotels have marinas and will gladly set up a fishing trip for you no matter what type of fishing you want to do. The flats, deep sea, and everything in between make the Florida Keys a spectacular fishing vacation destination.

Many of our visitors want to unwind and do it all. There's no doubt that if you want the most activities and bars per capita, then look for accommodations in Key West. The comparison for bars, shopping, and general land activities just simply isn't there for the upper Florida Keys. Of coarse Key West also has all the water sports activities the other keys have as well. From a sheer volume standpoint, Key West gets more tourism than all the other Florida Keys combined. Key West also has more hotels, bed and breakfasts, and oceanfront resorts.
